Retroscape Owl Diptych
My love for mid century modern design, is the inspiration for my Retroscapes. Created to complement the simplicity of the iconic architecture and furniture of that era.
These paintings are simplified landscapes capturing my fond childhood memories of South Africa safaris. My tree shapes are influenced by the Acacia Umbrella trees dotted all over the wild and majestic African plains.
The shapes are playful and animated. Some view the trees in my art as dwelling pods or otherworldly alien-like shapes. I call them my alien trees.
Other organic elements in my work are influenced by African designs and wood carvings and mid century sculptor, Henry Moore whose works I greatly admire. The owl is inspired by the late, Charley Harper, whose modernist works are a great inspiration to me.
My signature linen and faux boix (fake wood) textures are painted on the canvas and give a sense of nostalgia.
